Do Over Duesday #10, Predator/Human Hybrid

'Predators' is more than a name or a title or job description. It isn't a line of of work these creatures pursue in college. There aren't any gatherers on the Predator home world picking berries for their village. Predator is more than what they are called, it is what they are. Humans are pretty resilient but we aren't built to hunt the way they are. When our governments come to learn that we are a game for these aliens, war would be inevitable. And THAT we do well. Very well. But the question remains, how do you fight something that values nothing else like the hunt?... You build your own hunter. At some point a predator will get captured and our scientists would learn what makes them tick. Improve on their tech, splice their dna in just the right way and voila! A new race of killers. With out that pesky Predator code of honor, still raised to do nothing but hunt and kill but now on our side... at least for now.

Another Tuesday already? Well here goes-

Bruce Banner was involved with Betty Ross who was daughter to one of Hulks biggest protagonist General Thunderbolt Ross. He did not see Bruce as good fit for his daughter. Hell Even Bruce didn't see it but the heart wants what the heart wants. So what if Bruce's heart overwhelmed his daddy issues and gave Betty what he thought she deserved. The ultimate soldier like her daddy. When Bruce puts himself through the experiment his big brain's subconscious turns him into a bigger, meaner General Thunderbolt Ross.

Do-Over Duesday 03: Peaceful Magneto

Magneto is one of the most powerful minds in the Marvel Universe. The problem is he puts his mind toward ruling the world by way of pulling mutants up by the collar and attempting to rally them behind him to that end. What if Magneto decided to spend his life toward peace. First he would have to find inner peace. Peace with his horribly painful past and his anger toward the world. I think if he did this through monk like meditation maybe he would figure out we're all connected to each other and the earth and therefore to its energies and electromagnetism... and therefore to him. He would finally, through his search for inner peace find the power he always needed to control the world and everyone on it. Through that connection he'd becomes one with the earth, controlling the weather, earthquakes, the elements and the very earth itself. Watch out if Magneto ever truly sought peace... he'd get it.

Do-Over Duesday 02- Superman

Superman was never sent to earth as a baby but escaped the destruction of his planet with a few other Kryptonian survivors. Kal-El grows up in space learning to survive best he can with what tech they could get off the dying planet or acquire from other advanced races and ships. He and the surviving Kryptonians become well known through out the galaxy as high-tech pirates and Robinhoods. They steal and hijack from rich and greedy aliens and giving to his poor dying race to feed and protect them until they can find a new planet to call home. After nearly 30 years of surviving in space they may have found a new home... Earth.

Excited? About Art? My Own ART?!?!

A guy on Deviant Art wrote me to ask my advice on something. I thought it was a good question and something that took me a minute to think about. Here was his comment... No it's too much, I sum up...

He basicly stated that he doesn't have fun drawing anymore. He only sees the flaws in his work and doesn't like what he is doing. The only enjoyment he gets is when others like his work or gets something out of it. He asked me what I do to enjoy drawing and how do I get excited about it.

To him I wrote this:

First of all I'm honored you would ask me this questions. I don't know that I will have all the answers but I do know that all artists go through this feeling that you are going through now. I get it every other day working on projects that don't especially excite me but only pay the bills. Someone smarter than me said something to the effect of; Artists don't draw for this drawing they draw for the next one. Meaning we work not for how good we are now but in the hopes that the next piece will be better. Most artists I know feel this way. You are not alone.

My advice and what I do is this. First, I enjoy fans and friends looking at my art too. It's great to get that validation but beware. If this is the only enjoyment you will be prone, I think, to drawing only things that will excite and evoke a response from them and not you. And YOU are what is important here. Think back to when you first started drawing. What made you pick up a pencil. What in your head told you, "Ooh! I have to draw that!" For me it was comic books and to this day I love in my spare time to draw characters with a story behind them. It's not enough for me to just draw Wolverine standing there looking cool but in my head to be thinking about where he's going, what he is doing and where he is coming from and letting those stories come out of my pencil (or stylus these days). Draw what excites you. Let go of technique even and just sketch like you did as a kid. When you draw something you are really into then you'll be surprised how much better you'll get and you won't even realize you were working and the fans and friends will see the excitement in the work.

Do Over Duesday #1: Weapon X

I've decided to start a new weekly thing. I love Drawing a different take or alternate version of some of my favorite superheroes or villains. It is not only fun because I'm nerding out and doing the fanart thing but it can really push my imagination. I start thinking about how or why this hero/villain looks this way or that versus how I'm redesigning them and how/why this new costume came about. Stories and ideas start germinating in my head. Alternate histories, universes and futures unfold and then i go a bit more insane which I think only makes me a better artist. This is where Do Over Duesday comes in. Every Tuesday I will post one of these brain barfs for all of you to love or hate. Sometime they will come with a little story idea like a plot of "What If" from my childhood or it will be just a bit of costume redesign for fun. Either way I do this crazy crap all the time anyway I might as well share and I'd love to hear what you think and especially if you have any requests. Like a simple "Hey Ant, can I see your take on Superman?" to "Hey Ant, draw a zombie spider Smurfette doing a porn scene from Caligula!" That actually sounds kind of fun. I might do that. Anyway, Here is the first of hopefully many and I hope you enjoy.

And of course the first Do Over Duesday has to be a Wolverine. A few weeks ago I did a Weapon X Wolvie portraying him at the end of the Barry Windsor Smith story after he escapes into the snowy woods. That lead me to think; what would happen if he never escaped and they continued to experiment and use him as a living weapon. As they add more weapons and devices to his body he continue to heal and his skin would heal over it. Some of the tech would see through his skin. Over time his healing factor would reject all the brainwashing and implants they give him. The scientists constantly try to stay ahead of his healing factor rejecting all the implants. They even lobotomize him over and over and continuously replace large chunks of his brain and anatomy with tech in an attempt to keep a mindless killer under their control. Wolverine is one of the most bad ass characters out there but this is a downright scary mother f**cker. If they send this Weapon X after you, you are f**cked. They store him in a 4x4 room with 6 ft thick concrete walls. I imagine he still sleeps sometimes and dreams of who he's supposed to be and at times in his daydreaming rage claws at the walls. Of coarse eventually he somehow escapes and kills them all but for now...

Marco Polo.

Here are a couple more designs for The Marco Polo fantasy world. First was the mutated assassins. They have dragon features. Very strong fast and scary. And the earth water dragon. This guy rules the rivers and oceans. As you can see from the sketches both designs needed changes to their legs. The the producers wanted the assassin to be able to blend into a crowd a little better and with feet like that it would be difficult. And for the Water dragon I originally had him perched on a rock and was going to have the water crashing against it but the producers wanted him swimming which I also like better. If I was going to do it now I would have totally redrawn him instead of just changing his legs. It look way to stiff to be swimming through water. Maybe accentuate the fins and webbing between his toes a bit. He is amphibious so he needs to work on land as well so I went with a hint of alligator and kimono dragon too. More Marco Polo designs soon.

What Armor

Underworld Fire Dragon

This guy is one of the four dragon types in the fantasy world of Marco Polo. The theme here is fire of course but with the added underworld or undead element I thought more skeletal and charred flesh. Looking at it now I would have added a more charred flesh but I liked the fire oozing out of him like he doesn't just come from a burning underworld and he just on fire but fire comes from him and is a part of him. Hope you dig.

Va'Dim: The Villain.

Here is the villain in our Marco story. He's a warlord of the badlands. Originally a Mongol but was banished for unknown reasons. Made his way to the Badlands, became leader of the dragon assassin folks and is now making life for Marco and his peeps very difficult.

Below is the process I went through. Not many changes from the original sketch. He was one of the more fun characters. The over the top bad ass villains are always fun. Looking at it now I would work with his expression and his hands more. The face and hands of a character are two of the earliest reads of a character design after sillouette and they say a lot but I'm not super happy with either of them. None the less I am happy with it over all. enjoy.

Marco Polo!

So finally I can show the concept work I did for the super semi sorta secret movie proposal. Here's the story... no it's too much, let me sum up.

Our hero is the young Marco Polo. Our story has Marco commissioned to transport The Princess Evangeline of the Roman empire, daughter of King Rudolf, across the Badlands to marry some Mongol prince of Kublai Khan's empire and solidify the peace between their two waring nations. In this reimagined alternate history there are knights, wizards, dragons, human/dragon hybrid race of assassins populating the undiscovered badlands. I'll post a chraacter or creature every day or two and write up a little of what I was thinking and what maybe I would have done different if I had more time with the characters.

First up is Marco himself. At first the writer producers thought he would be an early thirties man of the world, bad ass action hero, explorer who had lived among the Mongols for many years. A ladies man, trained by Mongols and could hold his own on the battlefield. The writers and producers decided to go for the younger audience and put him in his early 20's as a budding explorer instead. Still something of a ladies man but not quite as wise and worldly. Below is the progression he took. He had the most changes of all the designs understandably but still not very much by typical industry standards.

First wack at the design I wanted to have a mix of eastern and western influences. I gave him layers of clothing to protect him from cold nights and hot day time sun of the deserts of the Badlands. A sword that was more Mongol than European but a scarf that was more European that he could wear over his face to protect him the sun and dust storms. For the second take the producers wanted him to look tougher and he has to have this mystical wrist compass thing. Finally they came to me and said they really liked what I had done but rewrote Marco to be a younger 20-ish version. You got it! I thinned him out, gave him sleeves again, removed most of his facial hair and there you have it! For the colors in general I wanted earth tones and alternated cool and warm colors on Marco to give him a bit of variation.

Overall I dug it. I liked the second bad-ass Marco the most but that's ok. The final fits the story more. He ended up looking a bit more European than Mongol which made sense for the new plot as he hasn't spent any real time with the Mongols yet. Looking at him now I would have pushed that a little further and probably would have shortened his hair and gotten rid of the pony tail. That in my mind was a Mongol warrior thing. That and the curve of the blade makes it look eastern so I would make it straight to resemble more of a spanish, swash buckling blade of some sort maybe.

There is a lot more in the days to come including the hybrid assassins, a Roman dragon killer and the dragons themselves.

Hello all! Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Good news is I've been really busy on the Moriarty comic. Still getting my storytelling legs back in shape. I'll post some of that soon. Hey Guys! Sorry about the lack of post this week. I've been really busy working on some concept art for a project that I'm not sure I can talk about yet but hopefully I can show you guys soon. It's really fookin' fun and really the kind of project I wish I could do all the time.

For now here is a quickie of Weapon X. If you've never read Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X you should just for the art alone. It is BWS at his greatest. It's what made me not only a big fan of his work but it cemented Wolverine as the my favorite super hero. That and and the fact that he was the only super hero shorter and hairier than me AND pulls some major tail makes him something of a role model to me.

Some more fun with the lasso tool. Wolvie and Hulk have always been two of my faves.

I like the final on this but I dig the pose for wolverine in the sketch better than the final. His pose is a lot looser and looks a lot more natural. I might redo it or reuse it for something. At the very least learn for next time.

Then Inglorious Basterds came along and for some reason this pic just clicked for me. He played such a fun cartoon character I think it just inspired the stretch. These were some peices I did last night at a Patrick Nagel inspired artist workshop. Nagel was an artist from the 80's who had a very distict style that you still see everywhere today and you probably don't even know it. Click the links to see what I mean. The models, Amy and Marrissa were awesome. They really inspired that classic 80's feel. Super fun!

This is a quick sketch I did to warm up today before diving into some comic book coloring. I'm coloring over someone else's lines and am attempting to match a color style of the previously done pages. New for me and I'm learning a lot. I'm coloring with a much more graphic and less painterly style using the lasso tool and selections rather than a lot of brush work like I usually do. That's how I did this sketch. Almost all lasso, fill and gradient tools. I'm still getting used to it but it's really fun and I'm getting pretty quick... well quicker anyway.

Last Night I hung out with a a couple friends of mine, Sam Sellers and Damian Dunn. (This is a previous sketch I did of them) Both are amazing artists and great talents and both are two of my biggest cheerleaders. Every time I hang with them it's like the ego boost of all ego boosts. And I don't just mean as an artist but as a human being. Sure it always starts with the art. They look at my work and like lions looking at a steak, they devour my stuff and can't seem to get enough and make sure I know it. I gave them some advice and tips way back when I worked with them at Universal Studios doing caricatures so they look up to me a little. (but to be honest if I had their talent at their age I would own the comic book industry. They are brilliant. Go to their sites and look at their stuff. Awesome.) And it doesn't stop there. If I didn't know any better I would think they were hitting on me. I actually feel better looking, smarter, funnier, and cooler after hanging out with them. It's crazy and that's where this drawing comes in. I was inspired to do this superhero interpretation of myself after hanging out with them last night to reflect how cool and bad ass I feel after chilling with those guys. All artists, if they are feeling down, should hang out with these two for a night. It's like a shot of adrenaline, laughing gas and super soldier serum all rolled up into one kick ass dynamic super artist duo. love you guys!

Storm Front

I wanted to do a quick sketch today of a female super hero but I didn't want to do a a cutesey pinup. I wanted to do a chick with balls so to speak so I went with Storm. She's way bad-ass! Her balls are bigger than most of the X-men and that includes most of the dudes.

I had a lot of fun with this one. I initially wanted to do a quick rough sketch but ended up going a little tighter than I wanted to but it worked out ok I think. All done in Photoshop cs4. Warm color for the figure line work and some cool colors for the bg. I don't think I did her costume justice though nor did I do my favorite of her looks. Next time it will be my take on Storm in her punk mo-hawk years for sure.

This is Dark Blue. He is the Batman to Rip's Superman. He's older than Rip and has been at the superhero thing for a while longer. Rip see's him as a rival/ mentor. He looks up to him and grudgingly takes his advice and help. Dark Blue knows everything about Rip (even things Rip doesn't know about himself) but Dark Blue is the epitome of secrecy. No one knows shit about him. His power is the ability to disappear in a puff of smoke but no one know where he goes. Whether he just disappears or if he transports away like Nightcrawler or if he's just pulling some Batman ninja shit. Did I mention no one knows shit about about him?

I'm getting close with this guy. I like the attitude of the bottom close-up and that full body color could use some loosening up but I think it's pretty much there.

This is he latest Pink Diamond. O like the wild hair and costume and drawing style for the comic but I think her character needs to come off a little younger. Her story is she's a young new hero that our lead, Rip is infatuated with. She's good at what she does, confident and not always very kind to Rip who is always hitting on her. Her powers are basically Supergirl with a magic twist that will be revealed in the story.

She inherited the power of the Pink Diamond. I won't say from who just yet. She's very smart and is very confident in her abilities but has some dark secrets she can't reveal to Rip who has huge crush on her.

This is Rip. A rich guy whose super science dad gave him superpowers and left him a shit ton of money so he grew up to be a superhero. He's no genius like his dad but he makes a pretty good superhero.

A little personal project I'm working on. I'd love to know what you think. C&cs are welcome. The far right is the most recent but I'm not a hundred percent. As I develop his story his design starts to come into focus more and more.

The reference I used was from some X-men promo photos. He is who I think of now when I see Professor X in the comics. I'd like to do a more straight forward portrait sometime or maybe a comic book super hero style rendition. I'm not sure if this was the most successful caricature but what do you think?
